1. What is IELTS Writing Task 1 Line Graph/ Graph with a trend?

The chart below gives information from a 2008 report about the consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Sample answer:
The chart describes U.S. energy consumption by different sources from 1980 to 2008 and the expected changes until 2030.

Overall, Petrol and Oil and Coal have constantly been rising and will continue to grow further in the future. Meanwhile, energy from Natural Gas, Nuclear, Solar/Wind, and Hydropower will essentially remain constant.

In 1980, the U.S. consumed 35 quadrillion units of energy from Petrol and Oil. This number was significantly higher than any other source and about twice as much as the following two sources: Coal and Natural Gas. There were a few dips over the coming years, but, in general, the demand for petrol and oil quickly recovered and rose constantly. It is anticipated that by 2030, Americans will use almost 50 quadrillion units of energy from this source, still far more than the remaining types of fuel. Similarly, Coal also saw a continuous rise from 15 quadrillion units in 1980 to a projected figure of 30 quadrillion units in 2030, surpassing Natural Gas along the way to become the second most used source.

The remaining energy sources saw little change from 1980 to 2008 and are all expected to remain stable for the rest of the period. Natural Gas started at 20 quadrillion units, and after experiencing slight fluctuations between 1985 and 2015, the number is projected to stay flat at 25 quadrillion units. Nuclear, Wind/Solar, and Hydropower, which have the lowest figures, witnessed virtually no change, each with around 4 to 6 quadrillion units throughout the entire period.

Đề bài: The graph below shows the consumption of three spreads from 1981 to 2007.

IELTS Line Graph Model Answer

The line graph illustrates the amount of three kinds of spreads (margarine, butter, and low fat and reduced spreads) which were consumed from 1981 to 2007. Units are measured in grams.

Overall, the consumption of margarine and butter decreased over the period given, while for low fat and reduced spreads, it rose. At the start of the period, butter was the most popular spread. Margarine was the most widely consumed in the middle of the period but, by the end, low fat and reduced spreads was most popular.

With regards to the amount of butter used, it began at around 140 grams and then peaked at 160 grams in 1986 before falling dramatically to about 50 grams in the last year. Likewise, approximately 90 grams of margarine was eaten in the first year, after which the figure fluctuated slightly and dropped to a low of 40 grams in 2007.

On the other hand, the consumption of low fats and reduced spreads only started in 1996 at about 10 grams. This figure, which reached a high of just over 80 grams five years later, fell slightly in the final years to approximately 70 grams in 2007.

Lưu ý quan trọng khi viết về line graph có nhiều đường:

Không sa đà vào quá nhiều chi tiết. Độ dài bài viết không nên vượt quá 200 từ. Phần lớn bài viết lý tưởng nằm trong khoảng 170–190 từ. Viết quá dài dễ khiến bạn bị mất điểm phần Task Response – chiếm 25% tổng điểm.

Line Graph Model Answer – Example 2

The line graph illustrates how many weekly hospital admissions there were in Fortsmith, Adlin, Stanton, Bardley and Oxley, which are hospitals located in a European country, between 2004 and 2018.

Overall, for most of the period given Bardley had the most admissions, while Stanton had the least. Oxley was the only hospital to see a decline in admissions and Fortsmith was unique in that their admission figures remained relatively stable over the period. Admissions to all other hospitals increased during the years given.

Admissions to Oxley hospital started at just under 250 a week in 2004 but more than halved by the final year (just over 100 admissions). Fortsmith weekly hospital admissions fluctuated at around 200 for the whole period.

On the other hand, the number of people admitted to Adlin hospital rose dramatically from just over 100 in the first year to 250 by 2018. Likewise, Bardley also saw a rise from 200 to peak at over 250, the highest for any hospital. In terms of Stanton hospital, only approximately 70 people were admitted in 2008 and this gradually climbed to slightly over 150 in 2018.

Tips for IELTS Line Graphs – Mẹo làm bài dạng biểu đồ đường

Dưới đây là những bước quan trọng khi xử lý dạng bài line graph trong IELTS:

Paraphrase phần mô tả biểu đồ cho phần mở bài.
Nếu cần, thêm thông tin về trục hoành/trục tung như đơn vị hay danh mục.
Viết phần Overview thật rõ ràng – đây là phần quan trọng nhất trong bài Task 1. Nên viết ít nhất hai câu.
Sắp xếp các đoạn thân bài hợp lý: nên chia thành hai đoạn chính (ba đoạn nếu thực sự cần). Nhóm các đường có xu hướng tương tự lại với nhau.
Mỗi câu nên có số liệu và mốc thời gian cụ thể. Đây là yếu tố quan trọng để đạt điểm cao ở tiêu chí Task Response.
Nếu không chắc số liệu chính xác, hãy dùng từ như “about” hoặc “approximately”.
Sử dụng đa dạng từ nối (linking words) để bài viết mượt mà.
Nhắm tới khoảng 180 từ cho Task 1. Đừng viết quá dài – nhiều từ hơn không đồng nghĩa với điểm cao hơn.
Học kỹ từ vựng chuyên dụng cho line graph: danh từ, tính từ, động từ và trạng từ mô tả xu hướng như rise, drop, remain stable, dramatically, gradually…
